Marvel: Civil War Full Set Review

Welcome back! It’s time for another edition of our Dice Masters full set review, this time featuring the just-released Marvel: Civil War set. Myke, Binh, Robert, and newcomer Alex are your panel for this edition, with Shawn popping in and out of the action from time to time.

As usual, these ranking represent our thoughts on the set as it releases and should be treated as sort of a Fantasy Football preseason magazine. But hey. WKO’s are this weekend and a lot of them are gonna have drafts. So let us help you out a little if we can.

Enjoy!

Individual Ra(n)tings:

Myke:
Draft: 4 Unlimited: 2
Chaos!

Robert:
Draft: NA Unlimited: 4
PROs: Low pruchase cost
CONs:
COMMENTS: Situational use, if the reciprocal damage doesn’t harm you (e.g. you have character dice with D values greater than 2) or the die your opponent can target has a “when damaged” trigger effect.

Binh:
Draft: 4 Unlimited: 3
Serves the low cost action die in drafts. Other than that useless in unlimited.

Alex:
Draft: 4 Unlimited: 2
Situationally useful, but I wouldn’t dedicate a die in the bag just for this.

Shawn:
Draft: 5 Unlimited: 2
Fun ping pong for the game. Useful in draft, not so much outside of it.

KO target blocking character die.

** Also deal 1 damage to target opponent.

Global: Pay [1 bolt]. Deal 1 damage to target character die that has already been damaged this turn.

Individual Ra(n)tings:

Myke:
Draft: 6 Unlimited: 4
A swiss army knife of annoying damage.

Robert:
Draft: NA Unlimited: 5
PROs: Global Ability; direct damage, burst ability
CONs: Burst ability is only on one face
COMMENTS: Effect is good to eliminate a blocker against an attacker with Overcrush or a blocker that has a “when blocking” trigger effect, but you have to be in position to pull this off, so this ability is inconsistent. There are better Global Abilities with a similar effect (e.g. Magic Missile).

Binh:
Draft: 5 Unlimited: 4
Pair this with an Overcrush character and it’s basically going through unblocked but instead your characters goes back to the field. Globals a nerfed version of magic missiles.

Alex:
Draft: 7 Unlimited: 5
Attacking will usually be in your favor with this action. Works great with Overcrush in unlimited.

Shawn:
Draft: 4 Unlimited: 3
Definately good with Overcrush, not so great outside of that. Does make using the Civil War die a little less civil.

Resistance- If a character die you control was KO’d this turn, move another die from your Used Pile to your Prep Area.

Individual Ra(n)tings:

Myke:
Draft: 6 Unlimited: 4
Sorta ramp-like. Sorta not.

Robert:
Draft: NA Unlimited: 6
PROs: Resistance keyword
CONs: none to mention
COMMENTS: This effect (moving a die from your Used Pile to the Prep Area) does not have any of the limitations of other cards. If churning your dice is a key tactic for your team build, this is a card you need to consider.

Binh:
Draft: 6 Unlimited: 6
Not bad ability, nice way to ramp. And in unlimited could easily get that Resistance bonus.

Alex:
Draft: 5 Unlimited: 4
Not a bad ramp if you have another resistance character.

Shawn:
Draft: 6 Unlimited: 5
This is a cool one. Havent used it yet, but seen it in action. Could be really handy in a lengthy draft game where your bombs are sitting in used for a while.

Myke:
Draft: 4 Unlimited: 4
It’s aight.

Robert:
Draft: NA Unlimited: 7
PROs: Burst ability – on two faces
CONs: none to mention
COMMENTS: This BAC is almost identical to the BAC With Great Power… from the ASM set. It’s better in that the burst abiilty is on two faces, but less desirable because it costs one more energy to purchase. Good BAC to use if you have other characters with abilities that benefit from being spun-up.

Binh:
Draft: 6 Unlimited: 6
Good late turn buy if things are stalling to buff up your character and CHARGE!!!!

Alex:
Draft: 6 Unlimited: 6

Robert:
Draft: NA Unlimited: 7
PROs: potential character die removal
CONs: none to mention
COMMENTS: Situational use, can be effective if your opponent has a high A value character die that can be used to remove another character die.

Binh:
Draft: 5 Unlimited: 5
I like this, penalizes them for having a big hitter. At 4 cost though could hurt to buy this die, esp when it’s not rolled.

Text:

Resistance- If a character die you control was KO’d this turn, gain 5 life instead.

Global: Pay [1 mask]. Prevent all damage to you from one opposing die’s “When attacks” ability.

Individual Ra(n)tings:

Myke:
Draft: 5 Unlimited: 5
Hmmm. I’ll have to wait and see how this pans out. And I’ll have to wait and see what things officially the Global is allowed to stop and what it is not.

Robert:
Draft: NA Unlimited: 9
PROs: Global Ability; Resistance keyword; life gain (a bunch!)
CONs: High purchase cost
COMMENTS: Even though this BAC is a 5 cost, if you are running Beholder or Ultraman, this is a BAC you must seriously consider using. The amount of life gain is significant (one-fourth or one-fifth of the total available life) and may give you time to set-up your engine after weathering a large non-lethal strike. The Global Ability is a great counter to Lantern Ring rush teams.

Binh:
Draft: 6 Unlimited: 7
This is a good way to go to time EVERY single draft game.

Alex:
Draft: 8 Unlimited: 9
If someone uses this in draft, be sure to buy a copy. I expect this to make games go to time. For unlimited, this is great against aggro teams.

Text:

Individual Ra(n)tings:

Myke:
Draft: 5 Unlimited: 4
Situational.

Robert:
Draft: NA Unlimited: 7
PROs: Low pruchase cost; A value boost
CONs: potential to weaken another key character die’s A value
COMMENTS: Situational use, to be optimally effective. You will need to have a “dump die” to take the -2A without weakening your attack profile (character dice with A values of 0 or 1 are the best candidates). I do like affilitation-based abilities because it promotes more team-building along an affilation construct.

Robert:
Draft: NA Unlimited: 7
PROs: Draw dice; Enlistment keyword
CONs: none to mention
COMMENTS: While similar to the Gearing Up! and Nasty Plot BACs, the keyword provides an opportunity to draw one more die. The prevention is an unfavorable option for your opponent, which, from a Control perspective, is always nice.

Binh:
Draft: 7 Unlimited: 5

Woah. Just remember that your opponent can buy this too.

Robert:
Draft: NA Unlimited: 5
PROs: Global Ability
CONs: High purchase cost
COMMENTS: Nice ability, but I prefer to use Anger Issues because it is a less expensive BAC and provides Overcrush. However, the Global Ability is a good preventative effect (with an unfavorable option for your opponent to prevent) for those aggro-archetype team builds.

Binh:
Draft: 5 Unlimited: 5

During your turn, when you may use a Global Ability, you may remove a squirrel counter and place a squirrel token with 1A and 1D into the Field Zone. Robert:
Draft: NA Unlimited: 1
PROs: Low total fielding cost; low purchase cost; while active ability

I like how you can gain some board advantage with this 2-cost character.

Robert:
Draft: NA Unlimited: 4
GENERAL COMMENT: I benchmark any version of this character against Tsarina first, then Stinger from the ASM set. Hence the low scores in Unlimited rankings.

PROs: Low total fielding cost; very low purchase cost
CONs: Poor D values
COMMENTS: Similar ability to Stinger from ASM, but this version is better because the ability is not keyword depended (Stinger has Aftershock). All other card and die stats (except Affiliation) are the same.

Binh:
Draft: Unlimited: 4
Good sniping ability. Would’ve been a good card for drafting.

Potentially gain a life each turn. His fielding costs can hurt you, though.

Robert:
Draft: NA Unlimited: 5
PROs: Good A values; very good D values; Resistance ability; while active ability; life gain
CONs: High total fielding cost
COMMENTS: The Resistance ability, In the case of this card, gains you 1 life. Not a bad effect that can be self-triggered with BEWD global or similar effects. Drawback is the total fielding cost is high.

Binh:
Draft: Unlimited: 5
With the increasing amount of ways to KO your characters, very easy to trigger his ability. In addition, almost guaranteed he will be sitting pretty at LVL3 no matter what. Only thing is he’s really only good just sitting there the whole game and not providing any type of win condition.

COMMENTS: Situational use and easily countered. The purchase cost is too expensive for the ability. In Unlimited, good way to eliminate Kobolds if your opponent doesn’t have a Sidekick to KO instead. Pair with Mary Jane – Hostage In My Own House, makes Bullseye 0 cost to field.

Great ability. If I were playing against her, I’d just buy weenie Bolt characters to block her. Or distract her. I’d have the time to figure out which one I’d like to do more since my opponent would have to spend 7 energy just to buy her.

Robert:

COMMENTS: Unless you are facing bolt characters or any of the three characters in this set with Resistance (Baron Zemo, Captain America or Winter Soldier), this version is a solid attacker. Pump her up with a few more attack points and you have a nice bruiser. However, her very high purchase cost will preclude this card seeing much play.

Dude. The possibilities! A lot of people may try to break this card. She’s a game-ender! Then again, the game will probably be over by the time you buy her, and you’re probably not going to be the winner. It’s a trap! Then again, in Draft, if you get her with Bullseye and you keep attacking and ramping with him, you could buy her within a reasonable amount of time. So confused. I’ll be playing her.

Robert:
Draft: 3 Unlimited: 4
PROs: Very Good A & D values; while active ability
CONs: High fielding cost on level 2; Very high purchase cost
COMMENTS: Great ability and merits the very high purchase cost because of how powerful it is. Unfortunately, this purchase cost may prohibit the usage of this card. Tactically, you have the option of attacking first with your bruisers to clear the field then mop-up with a second wave, or reverse the order and soften-up your opponent;s defenses then smash in with your bruisers. Either way, this will be a fun card for those players who like combat. Note: I’m basing this evaluation by playing this card as unblocked attackers do not get a second strike.

Binh:
Draft: 3 Unlimited: 4
Once again too expensive. And somewhat easy to counter, either let her through or KO her.

Alex:
Draft: 6 Unlimited: 5
Making this ability useful will require some planning. You’re going to need some high-D characters to swing in first to make this work.

Shawn:

Expensive beef, both when buying him and fielding him. I’d say you could do some weird BEWD shenanigans with him, but that’s pretty novel and at that point you’re just showing off. He was about to get a low rating, then I re-read the text and I realized I overlooked one word. OVERCRUSH.

Robert:
Draft: 5 Unlimited: 6
PROs: Excellent A & D values; Overcrush keyword
CONs: Very high total fielding cost; high purchase cost
COMMENTS: I’m not a fan of abilties that require me to pay life, unless they can disrupt my opponent’s strategy and/or lead to a win condition. This is one such card. Having Overcrush and the option to spin this die to level 3, clearing previous damage, means extra damage to my opponent. His excellent D stats make him very durable, so your oppoent will most likely have to multi-block, which may KO Deathlok and provide the opportunity to spin him up. Definitely want some A stat boosters available.

Makes your opponent think. Time to force your opponent to attack.

Robert:
Draft: 5 Unlimited: 5
PROs: Very good A values; while active ability, level 1 is zero fielding cost
CONs: Average D values
COMMENTS: Great defensive die. Spin him up and you can eliminate most attackers with 5 or 6 damage – if your opponent has no other targets to choose from, which is the limitation on this ability. Since this ability activates when your opponene declares attackers, Iron Fist does not need to engage. Note, this is character effect, not combat, damage. Buff up his A stat during the Main Step and you most like eliminate your opponent’s top attacking die, if it attacks.

Binh:

Really like this ability. Works better in unlimited when you have Taunt globals. His atack is pretty high so you can force your opponent to attack, have him KO them, then on your turn their field is thinner.

Text:
Enlistment- When Radioactive Man is KO’d by combat damage, draw and roll a die unless your opponent KOs an opposing character die.

Individual Ra(n)tings:

Myke:
Draft: 3 Unlimited: 0
Huh? I can’t think of any time that his ability would be useful. Or wanted.

Robert:
Draft: 2 Unlimited: 2
PROs: Low total fielding cost; low purchase cost
CONs: none to mention
COMMENTS: Niche ability – few situations I’d KO one of my dice to prevent my opponent doing this. If Radioactive Man is the blocker, and gets KO’d, I draw and roll a die (assuming my opponent does not KO one of their dice). Seems for the inactive player, there is not much up-side to this card – if I roll energy, it gets cleared into the Used Pile, potentially disrupting my dice churn.

Binh:
Draft: 0 Unlimited: 0
LOL. Myke, it’s when you can’t reroll a Bolt, so you BEWD global him to get another energy. Oh wait…it’s combat damage, get some energy for globals on yoru opponent’s turn.

COMMENTS: Your opponent has characters with Overcrush, Fast, Breath Weapon – now Taskmaster has all of them too. While having a high purchase cost, definitely a card to consider in Draft and Umlimited because he can support many team builds.

Binh:
