Marvel Amazing Spider-Man Full Set Review

What’s up! It’s time for another full set review! This time we have Amazing Spider-Man! For this edition, Shawn and Myke are back to tell you wassup, but Mat and Nick are taking a break. Taking their places are Robert, who some of you may have heard on one of the podcasts over the summer, and Binh, who is active in the Northern California seen with Shawn.

As usual, the ratings are a reflection mostly of what we think of the cards in a competitive environment. They also are based on mostly early impressions — like pre-season rankings. Time will tell whether we are right or wrong. But as you’ll see, sometimes we agree, and sometimes we don’t. Either way, enjoy!

That Global. Keep your Glass Beatsticks in good shape.
.
Robert: 5 4
OK in Draft (e.g. combine with low cost/4+ A, high D characters).  More efficient target removal dice for Unlimited.  Global has situational use.
.
Shawn: 6 4
New basic action that could be easy removal for some of the while active guys. I can see it possibly getting use. the global can be good for keeping topheavy guys on the field.
.
Binh: 6 5
Another fun way to use the Global is to turn one of their Big D’s with short arms into little D’s. .

Underdog – (You may use this effect when your opponent has more character dice in their Field Zone than you do.) – Field any character from your Used Pile at level 3.
.
Individual Ra(n)tings Draft Unlimited
.
Myke: 5 4
I suppose if you buy the die early in the game, you’ll have more chance of using the ability effectively. Then again, if your opponent is playing for Underdog, ummm, that could get a little complicated.
.
Robert: 5 4
Again, this is of situational use, however, it is nice to field a die from the Used Pile at L3.  But an attentive opponent can stymie this effect.  In Unlimited, Polymorph is more reliable.
.
Shawn: 8 7
I’m not completely sold on Underdog yet, but to fish for any character in used, just because. This could be another, possibly better polymorph option.
.
Binh: 7 6
I feel Underdog promotes an aggressive playstyle. Throw everything I got at my opponent right before this comes, then I get one of them back. Also works well with the new Sacrifice mechanic. .

.
Individual Ra(n)tings Draft Unlimited
.
Myke: 8 4
Within the set, direct damage is always a game-changer. And if you roll lucky it goes into your Prep as extra ramp? Sweet! In Unlimited, I’d use this with some Red Dragon Global for fun.
.
Robert: 9 6
In a Draft, I see this as a first turn buy…and your second turn as well (if you go first). Very effective against a “wall” strategy.  Very potent in a draft.  In Unlimited, you now need to consider bringing a counter-measure for this die if your strategy is striking with a big swing.
.
Shawn: 8 3
OK,.. for all you drafters, how many games end at time with a wall of characters on each side? This BAC can prevent that from even being a thing, This can definately change the way games are played in limited.
.
Binh: 9 5
Direct damage, prevents walls, and the ** makes this insane. Just make sure you buy it before your opponent does. .

.
Individual Ra(n)tings Draft Unlimited
.
Myke: 7 4
It’s aight. Making your opponent pay life is always fun. And if your opponent is going for an Underdog strategy in your Draft, a well-timed Global use can be brutal to their life points.
.
Robert: 7 3
Since this set has a lot of non-Villains, this can be effective in Draft, obviously not that effective against Villain teams, which are more common in Unlimited play. Global is meh – hate paying life (in addition to 2 energy) unless the game effect is well worth it, and this one isn’t.
.
Shawn: 7 3
This has the same type of use as the card above. Not seeing a wall vs wall strategy for this set, speaking limited of course. Thanks WK!
.
Binh: 7 5
Looks like a poor man’s Villainous Pact. Low cost, direct damage, and the global is usable (potential double dip) albeit a little pricey. .

.
Robert: 1 1
Too high of a purchase.  Better BAC choices in Limited and in Unlimited, better spot removal options (that won’t take-up a BAC space).
.
Shawn: 4 2
hmmm, who wants to sacrafice a dude? well, if you are doing it to better the table state, I guess its not too bad. Yet another removal. I think I like ArchNemesis better than this, as your character is not in used….. but, if you have a way to get your guy in used back…. This could be good. Sacrifice goes to used,.. and not transit I hope. Says used 🙂
.
Binh: 3 3
Yeah…I’m with Myke. Mine goes to used and his goes to prep? Sure I can sacrifice a sidekick but at 5 cost I feel like I shouldn’t have to sacrifice anything. .

I likey. 2-cost. The Global makes your opponent hesistant and screws with their mind. I hereby dub thee “Prismatic Spit” since it’s the cheaper, targeting version of Prismatic Spray.
.
Robert: 6 6
Ha! Like that Myke.  I spit on thy Spray…Nice cheapy BAC in Limited, have to play this some more in Unlimited to determine its effectiveness.  The global can mess with your opponent, especially those Widow and Cheetah teams.
.
Shawn: 7 8
Nice, we have a non D&D way of blanking out a fielded dude, and its basic. The global is cute, but doesnt really compensate for a gobby bomb or lighting ringing of more than likely more that 1. Nice to have the option of either damage though. It could prevent a gobby player from really wanting to field a gobby for 1 damage.
.
Binh: 7 8
Probably one of the better if not best 2 cost BAC. Only downside is that my opponent has access to it, so I just gotta make sure I don’t spit on myself by bringing a character that my opponent can screw me over with. .

Big price to pay to get some ramp.
.
Robert: 7 1
With few ramp opportunities in this set, this can be very beneficial, especially in the early game to purchase your bigger characters. Most likely you’ll be sacrificing Sidekicks.  But this could be a double plus if you sacrifice Silver Sable – Hero for Hire.  In Unlimited, I’ll use PXG instead.
.
Shawn: 6 5
Again with the sacrifice, ugh… but 2 for 1 can be good especially in a time of need. Some dice are better cycled than fielded.
.
Binh: 2 2
I guess the ability fits the title. Only time I see this really working is both players are down to the wire and I’m praying that I’m drawing 2 characters to win. Wait no reroll? Yeah I just screwed myself. .

Not crazy about the Global. The die ability is so-so, but for 2 cost, it can round out your curve in a Draft if nothing else.
.
Robert: 3 3
Meh ability.  Meh global.  Overall, meh.
.
Shawn: 6 5
Useful and it only costs 2. The global is a tad expensive (I’m speaking PXGlish for 4) but it can trigger underdog without sacrifing a character that has more use on the opponent’s turn. Overcrush or an unblocked dude… why not make him bigger?
.
Binh: 7 4
Great for draft when you run out of 2 cost characters. Globals good too to trigger some of those character abilities from this set, but a bit expensive. Would of been better if it was 1 mask. .

Shawn: 4 2
OK, a 3rd way to KO a guy. Can’t be a spider dude, and it might only end up doing 2 points of damage. Not as good as the other ones, but it can be removal.

Can’t wait to try this with Colossus: Piotr Rasputin. I’m not saying I’ll win, but it will sure make opponents nervous when I purchase this and Colossus early in the game. For draft, I’m not too excited.
.
Robert: 5 7
Ok ability in Limited, has utility. In Unlimited, with a team that needs spin-up, very effective. The burst puts this card over Focus Power.
.
Shawn: 6 5
Spinning your whole field to 3 is a mighty nice thing to be able to do, even 1 is cool. could be very handy for a team that needs guys to be bigger. Helpful in a Colossus team or with Myke’s fav gal Marvel Girl.
.
Binh: 5 4
I think it’ll work for drafts. Especially if this set turns out to be like the previous two with the wall to wall action (of course I’m assuming Betrayal is not in play). .

He’s like Jinzo, but cheaper! (And still not Jinzo). However, since Actions are starting to really impact the game, he’s worth a look at in Unlimited.
.
Robert: 3
I’d bring Jinzo (or Wasp in a pinch) – global usage is more common and both of these characters deal damage for it, while Carnage doesn’t.
.
Shawn: 3
A 5 cost mask guy with a 1/2/3 cost. He does get pretty beefy on the 3 side, and to Jinzo for actions. could be good. With timing, if the action is to KO Carnage, the bility is useless (Loki ruling, I would assume).
.
Binh: 3
Too dependent on your opponent using action dice with their setup. And for a 5 cost with bad fielding costs, Jinzo’s just a much better option at one more energy cost. .

This would be much better if the ability was on a cheaper to buy character. I really like the idea though.

Not bad if you can use the Underdog ability. The Purchase Cost is relatively low, so if you’re going second, his beefy butt can give you better field control than your opponent on turn 3. “Oh, you fielded 1 Sidekick last turn and I have no one on the field? Here’s my turn-3 level 3 Drax, fielding for free.”

Nice ability in a shield-based team, has some early game potential, but with Underdog in general, the mid/end game opportunities may be less available.

The likelihood of having a non-Villain character in my Prep Area available to put into the Field at level 1 is relatively low. You’d have to have some tricks up your sleeve to use this Aftershock ability.

Interesting to use with “force attack” effects; block with Aunt May to trigger Aftershock.  Possible uses with Resurrection/Villainous Pact to get a character into Prep.  But, this is too many moving parts.
.

There are lots of ways to use this card for benefit. I think using 2 of these to play with BEWD might be a thing. (BEWD wont trigget Aftershock, but it does ensure a target for her ability)

Since we all agree that basic action dice will get use,.. doesnt hurt to have them enable an overcrush ability. upkeep is rough. lets say you only pull 4 dice, how great is the ability if one of your dice is an action and hes rolled on level 3?

Eh Myke, more like Homer and Marge Simpson to me.With Cloak’s PC at 5 across all versions and Dagger at 3/4/5, that’s a lot of energy (and time) to set this up.  And again, needs Underdog to trigger. Cool artwork though.

Green Goblin may be pretty good in Draft overall, and this card can ruin your opponent’s day. However, in Unlimited, you completely go against the goal of keeping their Gobby on the field and you’re just setting yourself up for huge counterpunches.

Shes great. Built in Overcrush.
.
Binh: 8 7
Low purchase cost and grants an amazing ability. Beats buying hulk out and can be used as BEWD food. .

Cool ability. He’ll hardly ever see the field at 7 cost.
.
Robert: 2 1
Neat ability, but too expensive to ever see the field. Draft only for the collector value.
.
Shawn: 3 3
I like the idea, but it doesnt really equal ramp. If he was lower and a stepping stone into a more than 5 cost guy.
.

The Global alone will make me draft this card. You need to roll all the dice you can to be able to purchase or buy anything in this set.
.
Robert: 7 5
Definitly pick up in Draft for the global. In Unlimited, if you like to super-ramp (i.e. having PXG, Villainous Pact and Resurrection) this card is for you.
.
Shawn: 6 4
At first glance it looks great,… Ramp! but,.. after playing limited with this card, there is less of an appeal since you help your opponent as well, and only during your turn.
.
Binh: 6 5
His ability is a nice trick to do with those left over energy that I couldn’t spend. .

Awkward ramp.

This ability can set-up some interesting situations.  However, don’t feel the ability justifies the energy cost. Prefer to use Polymorph.

Cost a bit much, but it is a cool ability. I’d like to try using this with Aunt May. I’d sac a sidekick if I have access to pxg.

Sounds a bit like force target player to sacrifice a sidekick. In any event, wall of sidekicks might not be happening. Just having this guy in your bag might force the opponent to keep sidekicks off the table (in the bag).
